SEAL PUPS FOR BAYWORLD

SEAL PUPS FOR BAYWORLD

The Port Elizabeth Museum (Bayworld) is proud to announce the birth of our two new seal pups.

The happy couple Lexi and Lucki had their pup on 23 November 2014, a male pup. Sammy and Lucki’s pup was born on 7 December 2014, a female pup.

Seals have delayed implantation, so their foetus only implants 3 months after fertilization. The normal 9 month gestation period follows afterwards. With seals, the first 10 days of a pup’s life is critical. It is often that first time moms don’t pull their pup through.

Our seals, Sammy and Lexi are both first time moms, and we are happy to say that our first born is doing well and gaining weight healthily. The pups’ welfare will be highly dependant on their mothers, as they will suckle up to 11 months. We are now hoping to make it through the first 10 days with Sammy and her little girl too.
