Springtime safety
26 September 2012
“This does however not mean that people can become complacent,” said Mike Byers, Managing Director of ADT Security in the Eastern Cape. “Criminals may see this time of year as a prime opportunity to target locals or visitors who are trying to shake off the winter blues.”
Byers had the following advice for anyone who intended going out to exercise:
- Avoid exercising outdoors while it is dark outside, in the very early morning or very late at night.
- If you walk, jog or cycle, try to vary your route and schedule as often as you can and avoid unsavoury areas.
- Wear bright, reflective clothing so that motorists are able to easily see you; reflective strips on your running or cycling shoes are insufficient.
- Before you leave, make sure that your cell phone battery is charged and put it in your handbag or with your keys so that you will not forget to take it along.
- Carry enough money so that in the event of an emergency you can make a phone call or catch a bus or a taxi.
- Invite family or friends to join you rather than going out alone.
“Knowing these details would allow them to raise the alarm if you have not returned on schedule and avoid any time being wasted in the event of an emergency.”
In closing, Byers said that these tips can be shared with family and friends to ensure that everyone enjoys being outdoors during spring, and the coming summer season, safely.
