Statistics South Africa released its Domestic Tourism Report
Statistics South Africa released its Domestic Tourism Report for the period December 2008 to February 2009 on the 27th of July 2010. The survey was aimed at collecting information on the domestic travel behaviour and expenditure, determining the contribution of tourism to the country’s economy and to generate information for planning, marketing, policy formulation, monitoring and regulation of tourism related activities.
Key highlights for the Eastern Cape Province are:
· The Eastern Cape Province received the 2nd highest number of domestic overnight trips with 14.8% of the total overnight trips behind KZN with 22.7%.
· 5th highest visits in terms of day trips.
· The main purposes for visitors to the Eastern Cape were Visiting Friends and Relatives (49.4%), Leisure (33.2%) and Funeral (9.1%).
· Most domestic visitors used taxi’s (40.1%), Car (33.5%) and Busses (19.4%) to get to their destination in the Eastern Cape.
· The majority of domestic visitors stayed on average 1-3 nights (27.2%) followed by 4-7 nights (19.9%) and 8-14 nights (18.4%).
· Most visitors stayed with Friends and Relatives (81.2%) followed by Holiday Home (6.7%), Hotel and B&B’s (2.1% each).
· Most overnight visitors came from the Eastern Cape followed by The Western Cape, Gauteng and KZN.
