Nelson Mandela Bay – Stellar entries for the biggest Women’s WSL Qualifying Series (QS) on the African continent which forms part of the 2019 City Surf Series™

The upcoming Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing presented by Hurley has attracted a stellar field of some of the best female WSL QS campaigners confirming their entries into the biggest Women’s QS on the African continent due to the stature of the event. As the only WSL QS3000 rated event for women in Africa – the entry list features 22 countries being represented which makes up 80% of the field alongside 13 South Africans confirmed to compete in the illustrious event.

These are positive figures for the local economy as visitors will spend a minimum of five days in the friendly city of Port Elizabeth. The event will uplift and showcase local female surfers while also highlighting the support from the corporate sector.

Thanks to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ support of surfing in South Africa as title sponsor of this event, as well as the official vehicle partner to the City Surf Series™ - young, up and coming athletes are starting to realise that they too can be a dominant force on the QS tour.

This is the third consecutive year that Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is sponsoring the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing, which is part of this year’s City Surf Series™.

“The ‘People’s Car’ has a long-standing and passionate history with surfing culture. Volkswagen believes in the opportunity the series presents to local surfers while putting South Africa on the map for international competitors,” said Andile Dlamini, head of Volkswagen Group South Africa Communications.

The Volkswagen brand is committed to the City Surf Series™ because of the mutual desire to help drive local surfing and surfers forward. Volkswagen invites fans to join in this year’s activities and will be rewarding a lucky spectator with a limited edition custom-designed surfboard shaped by Henry Chomper (@chompersurfcraft) and designed by Martin Lund (@marti_lund). A second custom board designed by Mr Migo (@awehmigo) will be awarded to Surfing South Africa’s (SSA) best performing Rising Star from the City Surf Series. The boards were commissioned by Volkswagen as a means to celebrate the history between the iconic people mover brand and the wonderful world of surfing.

And with added support from presenting partner – Hurley (https://www.hurley.com/za/en_gb/c/hurley) who will be showcasing their latest range with a Hurley store based at the beach – the event is going to be enjoyed by both members of the public, surf fans as well as athletes.

The Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing presented by Hurley runs from 13 to 17 June 2019 and will therefore celebrate Youth Day on Sunday 16 June by crowning champions in the u18 divisions (JQS1000 Men & Women) as well as SSA Longboard Men’s and Women’s divisions.

The ladies will be celebrated on the final day of competition with champions crowned in the QS3000 Women’s division.

Accelerate Sport, the event organisers of the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing presented by Hurley have decided to hold two days of FREE live streaming on both Sunday 16th June and Monday 17th June so avid surf fans will be able to catch each action packed heat live and see 2019 champions crowned. More information will be shared on the City Surf Series South Africa FB page - https://www.facebook.com/CitySurfSeriesZA/

With the aim to expose and further develop the sport of surfing which will be included in the 2020 Olympic Games, as well as attract foreign athletes to our shores - each City Surf Series™ event will feature WSL QS internationally rated Men’s, Women’s as well as Pro Junior Men’s and Pro Junior Women’s divisions.

Dedicated to uplifting and growing surf communities in all event locations, the City Surf Series™ gives back to the local surf community by working alongside the national controlling body of the sport – Surfing South Africa (SSA) and incorporating SSA Learn to Surf Initiatives which are designed to foster and encourage surfing among young people, regardless of their background.

A community Beach Clean Up forms part of each CSS event itinerary and members of the public are urged to get involved – all Beach Clean Up schedules will be posted on the City Surf Series™ social media platforms.
