THE BOARDWALK INSPIRES COHESIVENESS AMONGST EMPLOYEES AS IT ENTERS NEW ERA FOR FOOD AND BEVERAGE

Teamwork was the order of the day during The Boardwalk’s Amazing Race-styled teambuilding event.

In 2015, Sun International embarked on an ambitious and challenging strategic initiative to in-source the food and beverage component of its business at all of its units across South Africa, including The Boardwalk.

In addition to the revamping of facilities and restructuring of operations, the project involved the necessary repositioning of The Boardwalk’s onboarding strategy for new and existing staff into the food and beverage operation.

“We needed a passion-injecting ‘Hoo-Ha!’ moment for reengaging with our existing staff and incorporating newly in-sourced employees into the fold. We wanted to inspire a culture of unity and a spirit of enthusiasm as we embarked on this new journey,” says Colin Carmody, Learning and Development Manager at The Boardwalk.

The Boardwalk embarked on an integrated induction programme, called The Boardwalk Journey, which it used as an opportunity to build camaraderie and trust between the newly insourced and existing employees. Staff was invited to participate openly in discussions and ask critical questions around how they would like managers and leaders to engage with them. These engagement sessions were extremely insightful and valuable.

These interactive sessions, as part of the induction programme, were aligned with The Boardwalk’s strategic pillar of “Our People” which focuses building a high performance, goal-orientated and inspired culture through, amongst others, encouraging openness, engagement and ideas.

Of course, enticing excitement and teamwork cannot be achieved without a “fun factor”. To encourage employees to work together to solve problems and think creatively, The Boardwalk staged an Amazing Race styled event for all staff.

Employees were split into eight teams and had to solve puzzles, run and work together to complete various challenges. While having tremendous fun, employees learned some meaningful lessons, which showcased The Boardwalk’s values of passion and teamwork.
