The Retired Community of Nelson Mandela Bay

The Retired Community of Nelson Mandela Bay are invited to attend an event in remembrance of the South End Community on Thursday, 26 July 2018.

Annually the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum pays tribute to our Retired Communities in Nelson Mandela Bay as part of our Mandela Month celebrations.

Last year we invited the NEW BRIGHTON community to come and share their stories. This year we would like to invite the Community who were born or lived in SOUTH END to the Art Museum for a morning tea and talk.

The guest speaker for the event is Colin Abrahams, the Administrator of the South End Museum who will present a talk titled: South End and the history of forced removal in the city. There will also be a performance by local poets of new work produced in response to the Art Museum’s exhibition.

Guests can arrive between 9:30 and 10:30 and light refreshments will be served.

The event will take place in the exhibition ART/LAW: Re Reflecting through art on our Human Rights past and present. The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum has honored Nelson Mandela’s centenary through a series of exhibitions and programs that reflect on values of Mandela and the South African Constitution. The exhibition ART/LAW pays tribute to the legacy of Nelson Mandela by looking at how artists as the voices of the people and the conscious of the country, have reflected on law and history of South Africa. 

The selected artworks reflect past injustice and the current struggles for freedom and democracy. A section of the exhibition looks at the forced removals that happened at South End and earlier in Richmond Hill.
