WOW opportunity for Bay comedians
The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), a key player in the rejuvenation of the arts, heritage and cultural economy of Nelson Mandela Bay, takes its responsibility as no laughing matter, seriously. The Agency in partnership with WOW entertainment, the organizers of the much sought after 99% Xhosa Comedy series, will offer performance slots to promising Nelson Mandela Bay comedians, to share the stage with the cream of the crop on Sunday 15th of June at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre.
The MBDA is the initiator and developer behind the famous Route 67 arts and heritage project, the urban regeneration of Central, including the upgrade of Belmont Terrace, Trinder square, as well as the iconic Athenaeum and theatre, all aimed at creating a vibrant cultural hub for the Bay. WOW entertainment have hosted the famous, always sold out 99% Xhosa Comedy series in the Bay for seven years running. The series is also credited with the success and growth of Port Elizabeth born, Ntosh Madlingozi who has since, featured in many chicken commercials and other successful national comedy road shows.
“We love coming out here, the comedians really enjoy the PE crowd, and every year it’s a tough call to decide who we leave behind. We’ve also had some great acts from the Bay area, many times surprising all of us. This year’s lineup is as strong as ever” says the man behind the concept, Monwabisi Grootboom.
Speaking from an arts development perspective, MBDA Project Leader, Oyama Vanto says “We have created an opportunity for aspiring comedians to spend quality time with established names like Skhumba Hlope and Mdu Ntuli. We hope the bay acts will use this opportunity for personal growth and development, and grab this opportunity as a launch pad for their own careers in comedy. As the MBDA we want to see many Ntosh’s make their mark nationally in this tough and competitive creative space”.
In order to participate and stand a chance to be selected to feature on the main stage, on Sunday the 15th of June, interested comedians must show up at the preparatory skills transfer and mentoring workshop, at the Athenaeum, on Saturday the 14th from 1pm. Keen comedians can call the Athenaeum on 041 585 1041 or email info@mbda.co.za before Friday 4pm to reserve a spot at the workshop.
