YEYETHU, SONKE: THIS BELONGS TO ALL OF US
A walkabout of the exhibition Elevating the object will take place at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum on 24 of February 2016 at 15:00.
Elevating the object celebrates the NMM Art Museum’s continual commitment to the upliftment of local and international craft with an exhibition selected from the NMM Art Museum’s noteworthy collection of South African studio ceramics, Southern Nguni beadwork and Chinese textiles.
The NMM Art Museum has been a forerunner in the elevation of ceramics, textiles and Indigenous South African beadwork to the status of more traditional fine art media like oil paintings. In the NMM Art Museum collection ceramics and textiles are exhibited alongside paintings and sculptures in a way that emphasizes the aesthetic contribution that both craft and fine art make to the world.
Elevating the object forms part of the NMM Art Museum’s 60th celebrations. On 22 June 2016
the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum will have inspired art lovers for 60 years. To commemorate this momentous milestone the NMM Art Museum launched a series of exhibitions that explore the history of the NMM Art Museum’s extensive collection while paying tribute to the community of Nelson Mandela Bay who have supported us throughout our 60 years.
The planned commemorative exhibitions will conclude with a final exhibition of highlights from the museum’s collection titled YEYETHU, SONKE (THIS BELONGS TO ALL OF US): 60 YEARS OF COLLECTING which will open on the Art Museum’s 60th anniversary on the 22 June 2016.
