Description

The Donkin Reserve is one of Gqeberha’s (formerly Port Elizabeth’s) most iconic and historically significant landmarks, offering breathtaking views of the city, the harbour, and Algoa Bay. Situated on a small hill overlooking the city centre, the reserve forms part of Route 67, a celebrated heritage trail that commemorates the journey to South Africa’s democracy.
At the heart of the Donkin Reserve stands the striking Stone Pyramid Monument, built by Sir Rufane Donkin, the Acting Governor of the Cape Colony in the 1820s. He erected the pyramid in 1820 as a touching tribute to his beloved wife, Lady Elizabeth Donkin, after whom the city was named. The monument features a heartfelt inscription and serves as a timeless symbol of love and remembrance. The pyramid is approximately 10 meters high, with each side of the square base measuring about 8 meters, making it a prominent feature of the city skyline.
Next to the pyramid is the historic Donkin Lighthouse, constructed in 1861, which once guided ships safely into Algoa Bay. Today, the lighthouse no longer functions for maritime navigation but remains a treasured heritage site. It now houses Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, the city’s official Tourist Information Centre. Visitors can explore the inside of the lighthouse and climb to the top for panoramic views of Gqeberha, but access is only granted on request.
Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:30, and Saturdays from 09:30 to 15:30. Guests must check in at the tourism office for access.
The Donkin Reserve also features palm-lined walkways, public art installations, and mosaic benches, making it a serene yet culturally rich destination. Whether you’re interested in the city’s colonial history, its journey to democracy, or simply want to enjoy sweeping coastal views, the Donkin Reserve offers a unique and memorable experience.
