Description

Pearson Congregational Church, a striking example of 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture, stands as a significant spiritual and historical landmark. Located in Central Gqeberha, the church was designed by renowned architect James Bisset and officially opened its doors in September 1881. The church became the new home for the congregation, who previously worshipped at the "New Church" on Main Street.
Architectural Heritage
Pearson Congregational Church showcases traditional stonework and classic design elements of its era. In 1890, the church expanded to include the MacIntosh Hall, a multi-functional space designed by O.W. Smith. This hall has served the congregation and local community for generations, hosting events, meetings, and religious functions.

Memorial to Lieut-Col. John Fordyce
Visitors entering the church will notice a poignant memorial in the church porch. This monument honors Lieutenant-Colonel John Fordyce of the 74th Regiment, who died heroically in 1851 during the Battle of the Waterkloof, part of the 8th Frontier War in South Africa. The monument serves as a solemn reminder of the church’s connection to broader historical events and the legacy of military service.
